Columbia University Formula Racing
Interested in power electronics?
The MPlab actively sponsors and collaborates with Columbia University Formula Racing (CUFR), a student club that competes in the Formula Society of Automotive Engineers (FSAE) student competition. The club consists of both undergraduate and graduate students who design, build, and test a formula-style racecar. In 2018 the club started an electric division, and in 2022 went all-electric. The club is advised by Professor Matthias Preindl who kickstarted the electric vehicle project. Several students in the MPlab started in the CUFR as a first introduction to transportation electrification, power electronics, motor control, and microcontroller (MCU) coding.

Columbia University Data Science Institute
MPlab is interested in applying machine learning techniques to motor drives, power electronics, and battery systems. Our work with the Data Science Institute aims to create more powerful tools for maximizing their useful life and operational performance.

The Columbia Electrochemical Energy Center
MPlab collaborates with CEEC on battery modelling and diagnostics. We work from cell to pack level for lifetime extension and capacity improvements.
